St. Joseph's Announces Winners of the Sister Patricia Ann Awards


SYRACUSE – St. Joseph’s Hospital Health Center honored four with the institution’s Sister Patricia Ann Award for Excellence at a special ceremony Mar. 25, at the hospital.

This year there were three recipients, plus a Lifetime Achievement winner. Skaneateles resident Debra Steves, RN, who works in the Family Medicine Center is the nursing award winner. John Viola, Syracuse resident, who works in nutritional services, is the employee winner, and Syracuse resident Dr. Thomas Aiello, a pulmonary physician, is the physician winner. North Syracuse resident Teresa Mortise, RN, manager of the Family Medicine Center, is the lifetime Achievement winner.

This is the 26th anniversary of the awards, which were established in memory of Sister Patricia Ann Mulherin, a hospital administrator from 1969 to 1987.

“The Sister Patricia Ann Award for Excellence is one of the most prestigious awards that St. Joseph’s offers,” said Deborah Welch, vice president for people and chairperson for the awards committee. “Sister Patricia Ann devoted 41 years to St. Joseph’s and was referred to as the ’heart and soul’ of the Hospital.  She was a brilliant and generous person who was honored by everyone and this award recognizes people who represent the ideals espoused by Sister Patricia Ann.”

All awardees received plaques, and all nominees were named at the ceremony.

St. Joseph’s Hospital Health Center is a non-profit, 431-bed hospital and health care system providing services to patients from Onondaga and 15 surrounding counties. Through prevention programs and the latest diagnostic treatment procedures, St. Joseph's with patients to achieve optimum long-term health.
