St. Joseph’s Launches New Electronic Health Record System


Fully Integrated Technology Live Across Entire Health System of Care

SYRACUSE, N.Y.— St. Joseph’s Hospital Health Center launched SJLinked—a comprehensive electronic health record (EHR) system—on May 1 across the St. Joseph’s healthcare system, including its hospital, clinics and St. Joseph’s Physicians primary care offices.

While St. Joseph’s has used electronic records since 1999, this system-wide EHR launch puts every provider on the same screen, ensuring consistency and improving coordination of care. SJLinked advances patient safety and enhances the higher level of care St. Joseph’s provides by enabling physicians and nurses to share test results, medication lists, physician notes and more across hospital units, ambulatory services and in transitions between care settings.

Many hours of preparation and hard work have gone into launching SJLinked. The simultaneous debut of a secure, online patient portal, My St. Joseph’s, allows St. Joseph’s patients to take a more active role in their own care. Patients can access portions of their medical record, including their current medications, test results, immunizations and allergies, and manage upcoming and past appointments via a computer connected to the Internet or a smartphone.

St. Joseph’s collaborated with Epic Systems to design SJLinked. The project has been a massive undertaking, with nearly 200 employees from various units working with Epic for the past 18 months to build and test the customized EHR platform. Fifty certified trainers at St. Joseph’s state-of-the-art training center led more than 4,500 clinical staff through comprehensive courses in preparation for the system cutover. Nationally, Epic Systems has 297 customers with 19 live or installing in New York.

Recognized by the American Hospital Association as one of the nation’s Most Wired hospitals in the use of technology to improve patient care, St. Joseph’s is the first Epic client to deploy both its dental documentation module called Wisdom and its case management module.

SJLinked will be interoperable with Central New York’s Regional Health Information Organization (RHIO), HealtheConnections, which shares electronic healthcare information with participating healthcare providers in the community.
