A Reflection on Aging – How Will You Make the Most of It?

My mother turned 90 in November and we celebrated that great milestone with a party of family and friends. She continues to drive, volunteer three days a week, make sandwiches for the Assumption Church Food Pantry, and be active in her church and senior center. We have a good friend who turns 98 this year. She is still active on community boards, and loves to travel. She will expect lots of dancing at her birthday party! Finally, my father-in-law passed away two weeks ago at age 86. He worked until he was 80, creating spiral staircases and ornamental iron work. These three wonderful examples reflect what the “third age” is beginning to become: Energetic people who remain active, contribute to communities, and stay very engaged in life.

As I drove to our campus this past Saturday, on my way to the opening of the new Kinney Drugs location at the corner of Butternut and Townsend streets, I was thrilled with the economic development progress that has been made on the Northside of our City.

Celebrating Great Leaders

By: Kathryn Ruscitto  Blog: Advancing Excellence

This week we celebrate two great leaders.   St. Marianne Cope, whose birthday is this coming Friday, is our founder and the guiding force behind our mission. She dedicated her life to speaking out for those not served by health care: those with alcoholism, leprosy, and in poverty. She wrote and called to action those who served in leadership positions to respond with care and kindness. She was rooted in her faith, yet had a deep conviction to go wherever she was called. One can only imagine the inner strength that it took for her to journey to Hawaii in the late 1800's.
