The benefits of diabetes management are many - preventing illness, preventing complications, saving on health care costs, living a long and healthy life and looking and feeling good. In the last 30 years, technology, research and pharmaceutical engineering have made the pursuit of good control an attainable goal for most. Research has shown the benefits of diabetes control and gives definite guidelines as to what constitutes good control. It has presented studies on the best nutritional and exercise approaches for diabetes management.
At least six new classes of medication have been developed which target a variety of the defects of diabetes. Long and rapid acting insulins better mimic the secretion of insulin from the pancreas and allow for tighter control with fewer side effects. With advances in technology, there are motivational and tracking tools for smart phones and on-line and advanced insulin pumps and monitoring devices.
Despite the commitment necessary to apply tools and approaches to controlling diabetes, the effort is overwhelmingly worthwhile and easier with current technology, medications and knowledge.
