Center for Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine
St. Joseph's Hospital Center for Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine is recognized for its commitment to providing quality patient care. It is one of only 52 programs in the country accredited by the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society. This accreditation is awarded to programs that meet or exceed the quality standards established for hyperbaric facilities.
The Center, located at 4206 Medical Center Drive in the Northeast Medical Center, Fayetteville, features state-of-the-art services for patients whose wounds fail to heal normally. The Center is the only combined wound care center and hyperbaric facility in the Syracuse area.
Our team of wound care experts provides comprehensive care for wounds caused by diabetes, circulatory problems, traumatic injuries, surgical wounds and other conditions. The program specializes in the treatment of diabetic foot ulcers, using the most advanced, effective methods of healing available today.
Professional, personalized attention will be given to each patient to attain a positive healing outcome. Our physicians and nursing staff have advanced training in the care of difficult, non-healing wounds. Our hyperbaric oxygen therapy staff is certified in the specialty of hyperbaric medicine. This certification is obtained through documented experience and successful completion of an exam in the field of hyperbaric medicine.
There are multiple diagnostic and treatment methods that may be utilized in a patient's care. Some may include:
- Debridement
- Total contact casting
- Biological skin grafts
- Advanced wound care dressings
- Compression therapy
- Nutritional management
- Management of wound pain
- Diabetic education
- Infectious disease management
- Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy
For selected patients with certain types of non-healing wounds, hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is available in the Center. HBOT is a treatment in which a patient breathes 100 percent oxygen inside a pressurized chamber. This therapy delivers high concentrations of oxygen to the bloodstream that assists in the wound healing process and fights certain types of infections. HBOT effectively treats osteomyelitis (bone infection), diabetic wounds of the lower extremity, radiation tissue damage, compromised skin grafts and flaps, and crush injuries.
Studies have shown that specialized wound care and hyperbaric oxygen therapy:
- Accelerates wound healing
- Reduces amputation rates
- Helps patients avoid hospitalization
