North Medical Recognizes Urgent Care Awareness Week

SYRACUSE, N.Y.—November 12, 2012—North Medical Urgent Care kicks off Urgent Care Awareness Week today recognizing the urgent care centers’ role in the community’s healthcare fabric by providing immediate care for acute, non-life threatening illness and injury

Caring for more than 60,000 patients per year, the goal of Urgent Care Awareness Week is to further educate patients about urgent care and how the North Medical Urgent Care can help serve their healthcare needs.

North Medical’s Urgent care centers provide comprehensive walk‐in, extended‐hour medical care for minor to moderate illness and injury that needs treatment immediately – but does not belong in an emergency department. Urgent Care is not intended for emergencies, but can be a more convenient and less expensive alternative to the ER for non-emergencies. Examples include a sprained ankle, a minor cut or burn, dehydration, an ear infection or eye injury.

“Our urgent care centers provide patients with what they need, when they need it, at an affordable price,” said Dr. Michael Schiano, urgent care medical director.

Emergency Rooms offer emergency and trauma services, acute and inpatient care for a variety of medical conditions. They treat patients in order of severity, from the most life-threatening conditions to the least. If you have a sudden, severe medical condition that endangers your health or life, call 911 or go straight to the nearest ER. Examples include a heart attack or stroke, severe bleeding or burns, a broken bone, a head injury or other major trauma. "Don't take a chance with anything life-threatening,” Dr. Schiano says.

There are more than 9,000 urgent care centers in the United States and that number is increasing by about 100 per year, according to the Urgent Care Association of America.

North Medical Urgent Care has two locations, at the North Medical Center in Liverpool and at the Northeast Medical Center in Fayetteville. The centers are open year-round from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m., including all holidays and on weekends.
