St. Joseph’s Health is Named Five-Star Recipient for Total Knee Replacement for 13 Years in a Row

Syracuse, NY (December 11, 2018) – St. Joseph’s Health Hospital has been named a 5-star recipient for Total Knee Replacement for the 13th year in a row (2007-2019), according to the 2019 study released by Healthgrades, the leading online resource for comprehensive information about physicians and hospitals.  St. Joseph’s Health Hospital is the only hospital in Central New York to be recognized with the 5-star in Total Knee for 13 consecutive years.

St. Joseph’s Health Hospital has also received the 5-star rating for Valve Surgery for 8 years in a row (2012-2019), Coronary Bypass Surgery for 2 years in a row (2018-2019) and Total Hip Replacement in 2019. In fact, St. Joseph’s Health Hospital is the only hospital in New York State to

  1. Receive a 5-star for Total Knee for 13 years in a row and a 5-star for Hip Replacement in 2019
  2. And it is the only hospital in New York State to be recognized as a 5-star recipient for Valve Surgery for 8 years in a row and America’s 50 Best Hospitals for Cardiac Surgery in 2019

These achievements are part of new findings and data featured in the Healthgrades 2019 Report to the Nation.

The new report demonstrates how clinical performance continues to differ dramatically between hospitals regionally and nationally. Every year, Healthgrades evaluates hospital performance at almost 4,500 hospitals nationwide for 32 of the most common inpatient procedures and conditions, as well as tracking outcomes in appendectomy and bariatric surgery using all-payer data provided by 15 states and the District of Columbia.*

Variation in care has a significant impact on health outcomes. For example, from 2015 through 2017, if all hospitals as a group performed similarly to hospitals receiving 5 stars as a group, then on average 222,210 lives could potentially have been saved and 157,210 in-hospital complications could potentially have been avoided.* A 5-star rating indicates that St. Joseph’s Health Hospital’s clinical outcomes are statistically significantly better than expected when treating the condition or performing the procedure being evaluated.

From 2015-2017, patients having Total Knee Replacement in hospitals with 5-stars have, on average a 70.5% lower risk of experiencing a complication while in the hospital than if they were treated by hospitals with 1-star.* Similarly, from 2015-2017, patients having Total Hip Replacement in hospitals receiving 1-star are, on average 3.7 times more likely to experience one or more complications than if they were treated in hospitals with 5-stars.* In Card iac, patients treated for Coronary Bypass Surgery in hospitals with 5-stars for in-hospital mortality have, on average a 87.8% lower risk of dying than if they were treated in hospitals with 1-star for in-house mortality.*

“This rating is important because knee and hip joint replacement surgeries are two of the most common surgeries performed in the United States,” said Dr. Seth Greenky, orthopedic surgeon and director of the Joint Replacement Program at St. Joseph's Health. “And with the rise in the number of baby boomers reaching retirement, coupled with increasing demands on athletes, the number of total joint replacement surgeries is expected to increase each year.”

“St. Joseph’s Health has been well-known in this community for its orthopedic care for years now,” said Leslie Paul Luke, president and chief executive officer of St. Joseph’s Health. “Every single one of these individual certifications or ratings is important to us because it proves that all of our collective efforts really are bringing the highest level of care to patients across Central New York.”

“Clinical quality varies significantly between hospitals, so it’s important for consumers to use information about outcomes to assess where to receive care,” said Brad Bowman, MD, Chief Medical Officer at Healthgrades. “These 5-star ratings for Total Knee Replacement, Total Hip Replacement, Valve Surgery and Coronary Bypass Surgery showcases the expertise and commitment of St. Joseph’s Health Hospital to their patients.”

For its analysis, Healthgrades evaluated approximately 45 million Medicare inpatient records for almost 4,500 short-term acute care hospitals nationwide to assess hospital performance in 32 common conditions and procedures, and evaluated outcomes in appendectomy and bariatric surgery using all-payer data provided by 15 states and the District of Columbia. Healthgrades recognizes a hospital’s quality achievements for cohort-specific performance, specialty area performance, and overall clinical quality. Individual procedure or condition cohorts are designated as 5-star (statistically significantly better than expected), 3-star (not statistically different from expected) and 1-star (statistically significantly worse than expected) categories.
