Patient Story: Tribute to Her Hero

The young woman stood in the hospital lobby dressed in running attire holding a full size American flag on a pole. Her name is Debra Ragonese-Green and her father was having a cardiac surgery. When asked what the flag was for, she replied that her father was in surgery and that she didn’t know what else to do while she waited. She explained that she does not have any medical knowledge and she wasn’t sure how she could help and support her father, an Army Veteran. A runner and trainer for the local YMCA, she decided to do what she does best—run. Deborah ran the Monday Mile over and over until her dad was out of surgery. She carried the American Flag to honor her father as she ran the mile 8 times with one of her friends. .

From his hospital room, David beamed as he shared stories of growing up on the North Side—the very streets he could see from his hospital window. David recalled his morning paper route took him past St. Joseph’s every morning; his first child was born at St. Joseph’s. Debra’s “8 hilly miles” took her past Columbus Bakery, one of his favorites.

On this Veteran’s Day, David is home with his family. We thank you for your service to our country and honored to be a part of your family’s story.
