Appreciation on Memorial Day – and for Other Traditions

I came into work on Sunday and stopped into the lobby to get a cup of coffee.

There in our hospital lobby sat one of our employees, dressed up in traditional church or holiday dress from Liberia. She looked absolutely beautiful, and we talked for a few minutes about the traditions of dress in her native country.

This coming Friday evening, I am going to wear a beautiful Sari from India for the St. Joseph’s Gala. I really appreciate Dr. Bobby Pohar's mother arranging that for me. It fits our theme, A Passage to India.

Thinking about these different traditions has reminded me this Memorial Day weekend about the diversity of cultures, experiences, and conflicts from which we have all come. Every day, we all arrive throughout our system, united by the same mission, patient care, and appreciation for what our country has to offer each of us – and those we are privileged to serve.

Thank you to all our employees who have served in the military and continue to serve our country and our patients. We are here because of your tremendous sacrifice, and what you continue to contribute.
