Planning to Indulge in Fair's Fried Foods?
August 24, 2016Good Thing Syracuse Has Best Cardiology Care – With New Technology
Syracuse, NY (August 24, 2016) – Dozens of studies have shown that the more fried food you eat, the greater your risk for heart failure – and we know there will be plenty of people indulging in some of the craziest fried foods at the Great New York State Fair this week!
Dr. Ronald P. Caputo, cardiologist with St. Joseph’s Cardiology Associates, says: “Even with foods named ‘heart attack burger’ many people still don’t understand the tremendous impact that a poor diet can have on their heart’s health.”
St. Joseph’s is one of the first hospitals to now offer the Absorb™ bioresorbable heart stent, the first-of-its-kind medical device commercially available to treat people with coronary artery disease in the United States.[1] St. Joseph’s participated in the original study which started several years ago, and has treated the second highest number of patients in the United States through the study and the highest number in the Northeast.

“We are always looking for ‘better’ in medicine, so we are continually evaluating new technologies,” Dr. Caputo said. “The new dissolving stent is a significant improvement because our ideal goal is to leave the body the way it was naturally before we started.”

Abbott Laboratories’ Absorb™ is a new type of stent made of biodegradable material that gradually disappears after restoring blood flow to the heart. Dr. Caputo participated in the trials for Abbott’s dissolving stent, which officially received FDA approval in July. Absorb is the only fully dissolving stent approved for the treatment of coronary artery disease, and is only for certain patients at this time.
Dr. Caputo says, “There are a lot of anatomical considerations, like vessel size or branches near the vessel, which determine a patient’s eligibility for this particular stent.”
Dr. Caputo was also one of the first surgeons, along with St. Joseph’s Dr. Ayman Iskander, to perform the first MitraClip cases in Central New York back in 2015.
Since performing the first open heart surgery in 1958, and as the third center in the United States to perform angioplasty, St. Joseph's has continued to lead the way in the prevention, detection and treatment of heart disease. St. Joseph’s cardiac care is recognized by U.S. News & World Report, HealthGrades, Excellus, the Society of Chest Pain Centers, and the Society for Thoracic Surgeons; and is a regional Structural Heart Disease Center of Excellence. It is also ranked among Top in the Nation for Heart Surgery by Consumer Reports and has received a Five Star rating for Valve Replacement Surgery, among many other awards and designations.
