Starting Tomorrow: It’s Men’s Health “Movember”
October 31, 2016St. Joseph’s Health Urology Doctors Work to Raise Awareness
Syracuse, NY (October 31, 2016) – The month of November has become known as “Movember” as part of the national movement to raise awareness and vital funds for men’s health – and it all begins tomorrow.
The Movember Foundation is the only global charity focused solely on men’s health. Men and women sign up at Movember.com, and choose to Grow, Move or Host. Men start November 1st clean-shaven, and grow only a moustache for the month; or men and women can commit to move every day during Movember, or host an event. Participants get friends, family, or colleagues to donate to their efforts to change the face of men’s health.
Doctors Angelo DeRosalia and Elan Salzhauer at St. Joseph’s Urology practice are proudly participating in the annual Movember campaign, meeting the challenge to grow a moustache all month-long in order to spark conversations and raise awareness for men’s health. Photos of the doctor’s progress in growing and grooming their moustaches, including their first shave at the Hall of Fame Barbershop, will be posted weekly on St. Joseph’s social media pages. Donations to the Movember campaign to raise funds to support men’s health can be made at www.Movember.com.

The St. Joseph’s Urologists are also sharing their top five tips for men’s health, to help in the prevention, early detection and treatment of prostate and testicular cancers:
1. Get Checked Out – It sounds simple, but far too few men get screened for these cancers. Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men (after skin cancer), and the chance of having prostate cancer increases with age. So, make sure to visit your urologist and talk about what’s best for you.
2. Move – The best thing you can do for your health is to stay active. How you move is up to you. Whether it’s a work out one day, a quick jog at lunchtime the next, an hour at the ping-pong table, or an epic bike ride, no move is too big or small.
3. Talk With Family – Family history is one of the most powerful tools to understanding your health. Family history affects your level of risk for cancer, diabetes, heart disease and stroke, among other illnesses. It all starts with a conversation; talk to your family and take note of illnesses that a direct relative has experienced. Be sure to learn about relatives that are deceased as well.
4. Learn – In addition to talking with your doctor, check out credible information sources like Movember.com to learn more about men’s health, including prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and mental health.
5. If you notice something, do something – You know your body better than anyone. If you notice something isn’t feeling right, don’t put it off and hope that it goes away, go to the doctor and get it checked out. Early detection is the most important factor in treating the big issues.
St. Joseph’s has pioneered robotic urologic surgery in Syracuse, performing robotic procedures since 2006 using the Da Vinci Robotic System.
“We have the most up-to-date, cutting-edge robotic and laparoscopic techniques available for a variety of urologic cancers and reconstruction, including prostate cancer, bladder cancer, kidney cancer, and ureteral cancer,” said Dr. Angelo R. DeRosalia, Chief of The Section of Urology at St. Joseph’s Health. “And minimally invasive techniques for the management of other urologic conditions as well, including BPH, urinary issues, incontinence, urinary tract reconstruction and stone disease.”
Men (and women) can learn more about these procedures and the services available here in Syracuse at www.sjhsyr.org/UrologyServices.
The Movember community has raised over $710 million and has funded more than 1,200 men’s health projects in 21 countries to date. This work is helping men live happier, healthier, and longer lives through investing in these key areas: prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health, and suicide prevention.
