Orthopedic Unit

The specialized team provides comprehensive multidisciplinary care, specializing in a wellness approach, for those patients undergoing total joint replacement. At St. Joseph's we have an entire floor (26 bed medical-surgical unit) dedicated to orthopedic patients. Our specialized nurses will provide you with exceptional care.

In the orthopedic unit, you will be visited by your surgeon, an orthopedic resident or physician assistant. You will also meet a physical therapist and your nurse on a daily basis. All these individuals make sure you are properly cared for and ready to be mobile as soon as possible.

During your recovery, we want to make sure that your pain is controlled; therefore, our clinical staff will often ask you to rate your pain on a 0 to 10 scale, with 0 being no pain and 10 being terrible pain.

Pain can be controlled in a variety of ways:

  • nerve block given before your operation
  • oral medications
  • intramuscular medications, if needed

Please let your nurse, physician assistant or surgeon know if the medications we are giving you are not controlling your pain.  We will work with you to make sure that you are comfortable.

In order to prevent blood clots, several measures will be used, including:

  • white elastic stockings
  • foot pumps
  • medications
