Syracuse, NY (September 6, 2017) – St. Joseph’s Health is pleased to announce Joseph W. Spinale, DO, MBA, has been named Chief Medical Officer (CMO), effective September 7. In his role, Dr. Spinale will lead the organization’s effort to ensure that all services provided across the continuum of care are of high quality and value, improve clinician alignment and satisfaction, and lead evidence-based programs, practices and activities. As CMO he will lead and provide direction to system-wide improvements in patient safety, quality management, accreditation and medical staff services.

Spinale brings a wealth of experience in business and medicine to the role of CMO. He comes to St. Joseph’s from Kent Hospital in Warwick, Rhode Island, where he was senior vice president for medical affairs and chief medical officer where he was responsible for oversight medical staff of over 700 clinicians, as well as oversight of ACGME and AOA graduate medical education programs, quality, risk management and indemnity programs. Spinale was employed at Kent Hospital for nearly a decade also serving as director of medical education and chief of cardiology.

Spinale earned his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from Ohio University in Athens, Ohio and his Master of Business Administration from University of Massachusetts Amherst in Amherst, Massachusetts. His certifications include: the American Board of Internal Medicine, cardiovascular disease, American Board of Quality Assurance and Utilization Review Physicians, National Association for Healthcare Quality, Certification Board for Professionals in Patient Safety, Certification Board Nuclear Cardiology, Just Culture Champion, and Lean Six Sigma Black Belt. Dr. Spinale has served as an examiner for the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award through the National Institute of Standards and Technology since 2014. Additionally he is a Fellow of the following organizations: American College of Cardiology, American College of Physicians, American Society of Nuclear Cardiology, American College of Healthcare Executives, and the American Association for Physician Leadership.
