SYRACUSE - St. Joseph’s Health welcomes Psychiatrists, Archana Kathpal, MD and Tarun Kumar, MD to its Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Program (CPEP). Located within the Emergency Services Department at St. Joseph’s Hospital, CPEP provides evaluation and treatment for individuals of all ages who are suffering from an acute mental health crisis.

Archana Kathpal, MD

Dr. Kathpal earned her Doctor of Medicine from Government Medical College, Patiala, India, and a Masters of Science in Clinical Psychology from California State Polytechnic University in Pomona, California. She completed her residency in Adult Psychiatry at Mt. Sinai School of Medicine – Elmhurst Hospital in Elmhurst, New York and completed fellowships in Child/Adolescent Psychiatry and Forensic Psychiatry at SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, New York, and Rutgers University’s Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Brunswick, New Jersey respectively.

Prior to joining St. Joseph’s Health, Dr. Kathpal worked as a Psychiatrist at Samaritan Medical Center in Watertown, New York, where she provided clinical psychiatric services to adult and child/adolescent patients in the outpatient clinic.

She has been published in the Asian Journal of Psychiatry, Apollo Medicine and Journal of Correctional Health. Dr. Kathpal is a member of American Psychiatric Association, and the American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law; and is fluent in English, Hindi, Punjabi and Urdu.

Tarun Kumar, MD

Dr. Kumar earned his Doctor of Medicine from Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore (Manipal University) in India. He completed his Adult Psychiatry residency at Mt. Sinai School of Medicine – Elmhurst Hospital in Elmhurst, New York; and a fellowship in Child/Adolescent Psychiatry at SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, New York. Dr. Kathpal also completed a fellowship in Forensic Psychiatry at Rutgers University’s Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Brunswick, New Jersey.

Prior to joining St. Joseph’s Health, Dr. Kumar worked as a Psychiatrist providing outpatient adult and child/adolescent psychiatric services at Carthage Behavioral Health in Carthage, New York, and Samaritan Medical Center in Watertown, New York. Dr. Kumar is currently working as the Medical Director at Behavioral Health & Wellness Center (an entity of Transitional Living Services) in Lowville, New York.

Dr. Kumar contributed to the development of substance abuse guidelines, which are now being used as the University Correctional Healthcare (UCHC) Guideline for Substance Use Disorder Treatment in New Jersey Department of Corrections (NJDOC). His other research projects have been published in various journals, including Asian Journal of Psychiatry, Apollo Medicine, South Med Journal and Hong Kong Journal of Psychiatry among others. Dr. Kumar is a member of American Psychiatric Association, and the American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law; and is fluent in English, Hindi and Punjabi.

Doctors Kathpal and Kumar co-authored “Munchausen by Proxy: A Case Study of Abuse”, published in MedPage Today and “Munchausen by Proxy: DSM 5 changes and the impact of social media”, published by the American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law (AAPL).
