Syracuse, NY (October 29, 2018) – St. Joseph's Health welcomes Stuart Blackwood, MD, to St. Joseph's Health’s top-rated and nationally recognized vascular surgery team. Blackwood is an experienced surgeon, researcher and educator.

He is also a member of the American College of Surgeons, the Society of Vascular Surgery, the New England Society of Vascular Surgery and the American Medical Association.

Prior to joining the vascular surgery team at St. Joseph’s Health, Blackwood served as a vascular surgery fellow at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. He has a special interest in complex endovascular repair for aortic aneurysms and completed a two-month fellowship in branched and fenestrated aortic aneurysm repairs in Nuremberg, Germany. He completed his surgical residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, and Danbury Hospital in Danbury, Connecticut, where he served as surgical chief resident from 2015-2018. Blackwood earned his Doctor of Medicine from St. George’s University School of Medicine in Grenada, West Indies, and his Bachelor of Science in Biology from Morgan State University in Baltimore, Maryland.

In addition to practicing medicine, he co-authored a chapter of The Handbook of Venous Diseases, Guidelines of the American Venous Forum 4th Edition, and has been a part of a few peer reviewed publications. Blackwood has also conducted his own research and presented at several meetings, including, but not limited to the Society for Clinical Vascular Surgery, American College of Surgeons Clinical Congress and Vascular and Endovascular Surgery Society. He was also the 2013 recipient of the New York Society of Vascular Surgery Grant Award, and the first-place winner of the 2013 Society of Vascular Surgery Poster runoff competition – the focus of his work being solutions to the current limitations of imaging after endovascular aneurysm repair.
