Syracuse, NY (May 19, 2016) – In a ceremony tonight, Dorothy Wrase Hares, a Registered Dietitian at St. Joseph’s Hospital Health Center, will be recognized by the New York State Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (NYSAND) with the Distinguished Dietitian Award.

The NYSAND “Distinguished Dietitian Award” recognizes a member that has consistently participated in district or state activities and been a leader in the field of dietetics. The winner receives an all-expense paid trip to the NYSAND Annual Meeting, as well as the Coordinating Cabinet and Board of Directors meetings that precede the Annual Meeting.

Dorothy Wrase Hares, MA, RDN, CNSC, CDN, FAND, has held positions in acute, critical and long-term care as well as management. She currently practices as a clinical dietitian at St. Joseph's Hospital Health Center in Syracuse, NY and particularly enjoys coordinating the acute care experience for interns from Syracuse University.

After receiving her bachelor's degree in Food and Nutrition Dietetics from Iowa State University, she served as a Peace Corps Volunteer at the John F. Kennedy Medical Center in Monrovia, Liberia. Her dietetic traineeship was completed at St. Mary's Hospital in Duluth, MN. She received her master's degree in Nutrition from Syracuse University. In 2010, she was in the first group of Academy members to complete the 10 x 10 course on Biomedical Informatics.

Dorothy most recently served as the New York State Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics President for the 2013-14 term, and has been tapped by local Syracuse media for her expertise.
