Now taking new patients!

The St. Joseph's Pulmonary Program provides a comprehensive and coordinated group of services while delivering the highest quality of care for the patient's benefit.
What is Pulmonary Care?

Pulmonary care refers to the medical specialty devoted to the lungs. Pulmonary care includes treatment for:

  • Asthma
  • Bronchiectasis
  • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), including emphysema and chronic bronchitis
  • Pneumonia
  • Pulmonary fibrosis
  • Sleep apnea
Who needs Pulmonary Care?

Pulmonary care is necessary for patients who have chronic breathing problems, diseases such as pneumonia, or who are preparing for or who have had lung surgery.

Inpatient Services

St. Joseph's "Before, During and After Care" program has improved our patient care and decreased the length of time you will need to spend in the hospital. For patients who have pneumonia, St. Joseph's has a clinical pathway developed by a multi-disciplinary team, including doctors, nurses and respiratory therapists. The clinical pathway for pneumonia is a systematic, flexible guide for patient care.

The respiratory therapist is an important part of the multidisciplinary team providing care for pulmonary patients. Upon the patient’s admission, a respiratory therapist will assess his/her respiratory status, discuss his/her pre-admission capabilities, and evaluate treatment prescribed by the physician and the patient’s response to treatment.

There are several options for aftercare available, depending upon your health insurance coverage. You may recuperate at home with the assistance of St. Joseph's certified Home Care Agency or other certified agency. You may prefer to recuperate in a rehabilitation center for a short period of time prior to returning home. Any of these options can be arranged prior to your discharge from the hospital so that you will have a successful recovery.

For out-of-town patients and families, we have arranged special hotel rates. We also provide special services for international patients.

Information, exercise training/conditioning and support are provided for patients with chronic lung conditions, including emphysema, asthma and chronic bronchitis.

Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program

Pulmonary Rehabilitation is a program of information, exercise training and support that is specially designed for people with chronic lung conditions. The program consists of education, skills and medically-supervised exercise. The program teaches:

  • Breathing techniques to help reduce shortness of breath
  • Medication information regarding pulmonary conditions
  • Panic control (when you are short of breath)
  • How to prepare for travel
  • When to call your doctor for help

The pulmonary exercise component will help you improve your endurance and lessen the shortness of breath when you participate in the activities of daily living. While you exercise we monitor your heart rate, blood pressure and oxygen levels.

This program is the only pulmonary rehabilitation program in Central New York. It is staffed by trained nurses, respiratory therapists and exercise physiologists. It is nationally certified by the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation.

The Sleep Laboratory

Sleep apnea, a serious and potentially life threatening condition, is the most common condition diagnosed and treated at St. Joseph's Sleep Laboratory. Our sleep lab is accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.

People with sleep apnea stop breathing repeatedly during sleep. They snore loudly, snort and gasp. Evaluation and treatment for adult and pediatric patients are available.

You may have sleep apnea if you answer "yes" to the following questions:

  • Do you sleep at night but wake up tired?
  • Do you experience
    • daytime sleepiness?
    • loud, obnoxious snoring?
    • morning headaches?
    • choking arousals at night?
    • frequent awakenings?
  • Do you have
    • aching in legs in the morning?
    • high blood pressure?
    • difficulty concentrating?
    • memory loss?
