David Nickels, PASYRACUSE, N.Y.— (May 29, 2024) St. Joseph’s Health is pleased to welcome David Nickels as a physician assistant at St. Joseph’s Physicians Family Medicine in Liverpool. 

 

Nickels received his Bachelor of Science in Microbiology from the University of Rochester where he graduated cum laude and earned a double-minor in American Sign Language and clinical psychology. While there, he held a research position in the college’s lab.

 

He went on to receive his Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies at Le Moyne College in Syracuse with an impressive cumulative GPA of 4.0.

 

Before joining St. Joseph’s Health, David held positions as a medicine technician and health aide at a senior living facility, a certified nurse’s aide at a rehabilitation center, a contact tracer during the COVID-19 pandemic and a grad student tutor for first-year students learning basic concepts of medicine, clinical decision making, critical thinking skills and test taking. 

 

“I’ve always felt it’s important to help others succeed as part of a team and, as a physician assistant, to be able to help as many patients as I can achieve wellness, especially those who may have communication barriers,” said David. “That is why I spent time learning American Sign Language. St. Joseph’s Physicians Primary Care offers a very inclusive community both among colleagues and in the community which is a large part of what drew me here. I’m excited to work among such compassionate and talented professionals, especially so close to home.”

Outside of work, David is highly skilled in martial arts. He has a 3rd Degree Black Belt in Kempo Karate and also worked as a karate instructor. He enjoys hiking, camping and indoor rock climbing.
