SYRACUSE, N.Y.— St. Joseph's Health is pleased to welcome Andrew I. Philip, MD, a board-certified pulmonologist and critical care physician, to St. Joseph's Physicians Pulmonary Health in Liverpool. Dr. Philip brings more than a decade of experience in pulmonary medicine, critical care, medical education and clinical leadership to the practice.

A native of Central New York, Dr. Philip grew up in the East Syracuse-Minoa School District before beginning a distinguished career in military and academic medicine. After serving for 11 years as a physician in the United States Navy, he returned to the Syracuse area in 2017 to care for patients in the community.

Dr. Philip joins St. Joseph's Health from the Syracuse VA Medical Center, where he served in the Department of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine. He most recently served as Medical Director for Respiratory Care Services and is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at SUNY Upstate Medical University. Throughout his career, he has been recognized for his commitment to patient care, physician education and advancing evidence-based treatment for respiratory disease.

"Returning to Central New York after my military service was an opportunity to come home and raise my family in the community that helped shape me," said Dr. Philip. "For nearly a decade, I have been honored to care for our nation's veterans. I'm excited to now bring that experience to St. Joseph's Health and serve an even broader patient population throughout the region."

Dr. Philip earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, where he later served as Chief Resident. He went on to complete a fellowship in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.

Board-certified in Pulmonary Medicine, Critical Care Medicine and Internal Medicine, Dr. Philip has distinguished himself as both a clinician and educator. He previously served on the faculty at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and the Uniformed Services University and held numerous leadership positions.

"I've always been fascinated by pulmonary medicine because the lungs connect us directly to the world around us," Dr. Philip said. "My interest in respiratory health grew from both that scientific curiosity and my lifelong passion for endurance sports and fitness. Joining the talented team at St. Joseph's Health is an exciting opportunity to help patients breathe easier, stay active and enjoy a better quality of life."

During his service in the United States Navy, Dr. Philip was deployed to Afghanistan as a critical care physician supporting military operations. His service earned multiple military honors, including the Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Navy Commendation Medal and Navy Achievement Medal.

Dr. Philip is married and has two children, an 11-year-old daughter and a 9-year-old son. Outside of medicine, he enjoys spending time with his family, whose activities keep him busy year-round. In his free time, he enjoys running, hiking, training in jiu jitsu, cycling, weightlifting, cooking, reading, collecting records and international travel. An accomplished endurance athlete, he has competed in multiple marathons, including the Boston Marathon and New York City Marathon.
