St. Joseph’s Health Welcomes Prashant Deshmane, MD, to Orthopedic and Spine Care

SYRACUSE, N.Y.— St. Joseph’s Health is pleased to welcome Prashant Deshmane, MD, to St. Joseph’s Physicians Orthopedic and Spine Care, where he will provide comprehensive orthopedic services with a focus on adult reconstruction, shoulder surgery and sports medicine.
Dr. Deshmane is a board‑certified orthopedic surgeon with more than 14 years of clinical experience, offering advanced care in primary and revision hip and knee replacement, as well as primary and reverse shoulder replacement. His practice blends evidence‑based medicine with cutting‑edge surgical techniques to help patients regain mobility, reduce pain, and return to active lives.
Dr. Deshmane completed extensive subspecialty training at some of the nation’s most respected orthopedic institutions. He pursued an Arthroplasty Research Fellowship at the Lawrence Dorr Arthritis Institute in Los Angeles, followed by Adult Reconstruction Fellowships at Lenox Hill Hospital and the Insall‑Scott‑Kelly Institute in New York. He later completed a Sports Medicine Fellowship at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago, gaining advanced expertise in arthroscopic and sports‑related injuries of the shoulder, hip and knee.
During his sports medicine fellowship, Dr. Deshmane served as an assistant team physician for professional and collegiate athletes, including the Chicago Blackhawks and Chicago Cubs, an experience that continues to inform his approach to treating athletes and active patients of all ages.

Prior to joining St. Joseph’s Physicians, Dr. Deshmane practiced in South Carolina, the Syracuse VA Medical Center, and, most recently, Mohawk Valley Health System, where he served as an adult reconstruction surgeon and was a referral specialist for complex and revision joint replacement cases. He has been instrumental in introducing innovative techniques such as customized knee replacement and advanced shoulder reconstruction.
In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Deshmane is deeply committed to education and research. He serves as a Clinical Associate Professor at SUNY Upstate Medical University, where he is actively involved in orthopedic residency training, surgical education, and mentoring future orthopedic surgeons. He has authored numerous peer‑reviewed publications and book chapters and remains engaged in ongoing clinical research.
Outside of medicine, Dr. Deshmane enjoys playing tennis and hiking. He lives in Central New York with his wife, Swati Banait‑Deshmane, MD, a cardiothoracic radiologist at the University of Rochester, and their two children.
