St. Joseph’s Health Welcomes Sandra E. Hansen, MD, to Anesthesiology and Critical Care Team

SYRACUSE, N.Y.— St. Joseph’s Health is pleased to announce that Sandra E. Hansen, MD, has joined its team of anesthesiologists and intensivists, further strengthening its commitment to delivering exceptional care to patients throughout Central New York.

Dr. Hansen specializes in anesthesiology and critical care medicine, providing comprehensive perioperative care as well as advanced treatment for critically ill patients.

Prior to joining St. Joseph’s Health, Dr. Hansen served as an anesthesiologist, intensivist, and Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology at SUNY Upstate Medical University, where she also held a leadership role as Director of Anesthesia Trauma Services. Earlier in her career, she served in the United States Air Force, where she began as a medical technician and later returned to active duty as a Special Operations Forces Medical Element Flight Surgeon, achieving the rank of Captain. During her military service, she held several leadership roles, including Medical Director for the 353rd Special Operations Group and Medical Director for the Joint Special Operations Component in Singapore, and supported multilateral international exercises across Eastern Asia and the Pacific as a Lead Medical Officer.

Dr. Hansen is a diplomate of the American Board of Anesthesiology. She earned her Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, where she was awarded the Military Health Professions Scholarship, and holds a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the University of North Texas, graduating magna cum laude. She completed her residency in anesthesiology at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center, followed by a fellowship in Critical Care Medicine at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia.

Dr. Hansen has contributed to numerous research publications and national presentations in areas including trauma resuscitation, perioperative transfusion practices, and critical care outcomes.

Outside of her clinical work, Dr. Hansen enjoys traveling with her husband and experiencing new people and cultures. She has visited more than 25 countries and counting. When at home, she enjoys exploring Central New York with their three dogs.
