Approximately one in eight women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime. About 232,670 new cases of breast cancer will be diagnosed in American women in 2014 and, while more rare, over 2,000 men will be diagnosed.
Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women, and the second deadliest. Fortunately, most women are diagnosed at earlier stages of breast cancer due to the use of mammography screening and regular examinations. The best time to start checking for breast cancer is when there are no symptoms—in other words, when you feel fine.
When cancer is detected early, there are more treatment options available and you have a greater chance of survival. Mammography screening combined with clinical breast examinations gives you the best chance of finding cancer early and treating it. More than 80% of breast cancer patients are cancer-free at 10 years post-diagnosis.
